The central theme of this paper is to applying the appropriate theory to the event of concern. The utility of international-relations theories rests upon the accuracy of insights these theories render when applied to happenings within the foreign-affairs environment. They offer tools for understanding more deeply these happenings. The intent of this paper, accordingly, will be threefold: first, to explore methods for connecting theory-to-event, essentially the problem of this report; second, to examine the theoretical approaches of three geopolitical writers, Saul B. Cohen, Nicholas John Spykman, and Zbigniew Brzezinski; and third, to attempt applying what the three scholars might provide to insights on the contemporary Chinese intrusions into the South China Sea and on the so-called Islamic State Caliphate violence taking place in Iraq and Syria. In this last aspect, it will be analysed how the theories contribute deliver some clarity to our study of the two disputes.
